There is tremendous stress on the ecosystems due to the increasing exploitation of natural resources and the generation of large quantities of wastes in the fast-growing urban areas. Unless this growth is structured with a responsibility and a commitment towards sustainability and an equitability, it would hav significant fallouts, such as the recent Pandemic of CoVID 19.

ICUC has been at the helm of these compelling urban environment development issues from its genesis. Our approach is in devising practical and actionable positive systems change. We position ourselves as a think tank and counselors to our clients.

We carry forward our collective experience to provide specialized services in solid and liquid wastes management, sanitation management, and water and wastewater management.

Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM)

While urban development became the topmost priority for economic growth in all the nations, the cognizance of its negative impacts came at a stage when they had already become a threat to our existence. One such negative impact till today is continuously growing solid & liquid waste and its management. It was evident that wastes needed to be dealt with an integrated systems approach.

An integrated solid waste management system consists of various components; generation at source, segregation, primary & secondary collection, and transportation, it’s processing to recover & recycle useful material, followed by disposal of inerts and rejects in a scientific landfill.

ICUC provides environmentally sound and sustainable waste management solutions with an integrated approach including 4Rs principles, best management practices, technical design of the systems, most suitable technology, recycling options, scientific disposal methods, implementation mechanisms, revenue generation, monitoring mechanisms, and efficient governance. We are providing technical solutions for integrated SWM systems as well as for specific components of the system.

ICUC has developed core competency in SWM and works in all types of waste; municipal, industrial, legacy, biomedical, plastic, e-waste, and C&D waste. We have worked in more than 300 Indian and southeast Asian cities. Our solutions are futuristic and practical with inclusivity of the informal sector, adaptable technologies, concepts of circular economy and sustainability.

Our specific areas of work include; baseline assessments, gap analysis, SWM audits, waste profiling, waste quantification, and design of entire SWM value chain. In addition, we have a core competency in technology evaluation, design of waste processing facilities (composting, biogas plants, WTE, MRF, etc.), scientific landfill, dumpsite closure, bioremediation, and others.

We prepare pre-feasibility and feasibility reports, detailed project reports, waste management plans& strategies, master plans, detailed design, and implementation plans. We also provide project management consultancy services for execution of PPP projects. Over the years, we have developed an acumen in this sector and are involved in knowledge sharing, training & capacity building.

With a rich exposure to national and international SWM projects/assignments, we are a one- stop advisory and technical assistance provider for a broad spectrum of our clients, including govt. agencies of various levels, NGOs, funding agencies, etc.

Sanitation Management

Sanitation, in general, refers to the safe handling and disposal of excreta and fecal matter and pertains to the issues related to their impact on the receiving environment and public health. Long-drawn, the role of sanitation management has been highlighted in achieving the nation’s economic prosperity.

To attain 100% sanitation status as a part of the National Urban sanitation policy, the ICUC team has prepared City Sanitation Plans for many cities across pan India by providing affordable, comprehensive and simplified sanitation solutions. The objectives of the plans are to help cities achieve ODF status, bridge the demand-supply gap of water and wastewater services, safe disposal of sewage, proper drainage, amongst others. We have also provided assistance to the cities in improving their rankings in Swachh Survekshan surveys as a part of the Swacch Bharat Mission.

Water & Waste Water Management

Unequal access of usable water, a lifeline of human existence, makes it one of today’s most critical urban environment issues. Right from its sourcing to disposal, water flows through a long, complicated journey. Therefore, managing water as a precious and finite resource and addressing the adverse impacts is again, one of today’s most challenging issues.

Our approach is to provide Integrated Water Resource Management strategies, a circular economy approach from catchment to tap and the 3Rs implementation to achieve holistic water resource management.
